– 1 February 2008
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced today that a Texas based consulting firm hs been retained to revamp and rewrite the State of Mississippi’s mandated jailer’s course. The firm, OSS - Law Enforcement Advisors will develop the curriculum from a job task analysis completed during 2007. The job task analysis studied the tasks actually undertaken while at work. David Salmon, a spokesman for OSS said yesterday that “the job task analysis completed for DPS will allow courseware designers to tailor a specific course of study that applies more directly to the real world.” The old course of instruction now presented in the state academies has been in place for more that ten years. “The new course of study will increase hands on training by students, involve multi-media presentations, and emphasize practical exercises”, according to Salmon.
Fort Bend ISD Remains Focused on Security & Safety
– 12 November 2007
The Fort Bend Independent School District voted last night to hire a consulting firm based from Spring, Texas to conduct comprehensive security and safety analyses of all the districts sixty-seven K-12 campuses. The assessment to be completed in about four months by OSS – Law Enforcement Advisors, is going to be one of the most comprehensive in the State of Texas. Fort Bend ISD has contracted OSS to review basic opportunities for improvement to strategic responses to active shooter situations. The districts decision to hire OSS is in part based upon compliance with the Texas Education Code Section 37.108 (Senate Bill 11). TEC section 37.108 requires all schools in Texas complete a detailed security and safety assessment by August 2008. Other states throughout the United States have enacted similar programs, but Texas is one of the first to require such comprehensive security and safety assessments.
Georgia Power Strengthens Security & Safety Lighting
– October 2007
Engineers and marketing professionals from Georgia Power attended an extensive Security & Safety Lighting training session this week at the Stone Mountain Lodge in Georgia. The training session was conducted by security and safety lighting professionals from OSS - Law Enforcement Advisors, a security and law enforcement consulting firm based in Spring, Texas. Dr. Salmon of OSS said, “The training session will assist Georgia Power in its’ effort to better serve their customers who are often faced with tight budgets on one-hand, and the need to provide better security on the other. With most violent crimes occurring at night, it is natural that we look toward more effective, yet economical solutions to crime prevention. This course will do just that”, said Salmon. A spokesperson said of the course, “We have learned a lot, and now can provide an expanded service when it comes to illumination and life-safety issues.” David Lee Salmon II of OSS, who is the current Chair of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (instrumental in the development of security lighting guidelines for North America) told us, “… good lighting is not only cost effective, but will assist in deterring crime. The obstacle lies with few professionals understanding how to apply current technologies. If properly engineered, corporations can save money while providing a safer environment for clients, employees, and visitors.”
Law Enforcement and Jail Policies for the Buckeye State
– October 2007
The Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association and the County Risk Sharing Authority just received their new law enforcement and jail policies and procedures. The Ohio County Law Enforcement Best Practices Panel voted earlier this year to develop model law enforcement and jail policies and procedures for their entire risk pool membership. The panel considered various options which included writing sample polices internally or hiring professionals to develop them. It was the final consensus of the panel to retain OSS - Law Enforcement Advisors to head-up this important project. David Salmon, the project coordinator for OSS said, “The comprehensive models have more than one-hundred individual policies covering important management, response, and use of force issues. This is a very cost effective way to reach law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio. Most departments throughout the United States simply do not have the resources to keep up with policy changes and training.” This is not the first such law enforcement and jail policy development project for OSS. OSS has completed similar expansive programs for Texas, Kansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
