Training - Law Enforcement & Jail Liability Course

OSS – Law Enforcement Advisors® as risk managers and expert witnesses are encountering a substantial increase in the number of lawsuits filed against county and city officials, the Sheriff, the Chief of Police, Departmental Leadership and believe it or not, the individual deputies, officers and jailers themselves.  The failure to have an effective law enforcement risk management plan with facets which include effective leadership, effective policies and procedures, a working knowledge of the new laws that apply in the law enforcement arena, effective communications with the public, proper arrest and detention procedures is in many cases prima facie evidence that department leadership and its’ deputies and officers are deliberately indifferent to the welfare of the public.

Discussions include the following:

  • The history of policing;
  • The Deadly Dozen® law enforcement libility issues;
  • The Big Ten® jail liability issues;
  • Individual deputy and officer liability issues;
  • Risk management in the law enforcement environment;
  • Relevant case law;
  • Vehicle pursuits;
  • Verbal vs. Written policy; &,
  • More.

We recommend that county commissioners, city council, board members, the Sheriff, the Chief of Police, Department Administration, all deputies, officers, jailers and staff be invited and attend this crucial course.

The typical format for the course is four (4) hours.  We recommend two (2) iterations for law enforcement personnel and two (2) iterations for jail personnel.

Certificates of Training will be issued for the course, and we recommend training time will be posted to the officers training records.  more information or scheduling of the Law Enforcement & Jail Liability training course simply contact OSS.
